The Norwegian Star Shines Year Round in The Hawaiian Islands

By Julie Caldo, CTC, MCC (2002)

A year ago I set out to plan the perfect Hawaii cruise for our group.

I didn't have to look very far because I learned of plans Norwegian Cruise Line had for the new, luxurious Norwegian Star to make her home cruising the Hawaiian Islands on a weekly schedule.

I presented the innovative Freestyle concept to everyone and we all agreed the smart casual dress and choice of 10 enticing restaurants would only enhance our time in Hawaii. We found the staff and service onboard to be outstanding.

Anne Smith, our concierge, was dedicated to helping us with any request.

Whether it was a reservation for a shore excursion or dinner, nothing was too much trouble.

If we ordered our favorite wine for dinner and didn't finish it in one evening it conveniently followed us the next evening no matter the restaurant we chose. A lovely, talented lady named Cathy Foy did a great job presenting The Hawaiian culture throughout the week. We made many leis with her and learned various styles of Hula dancing.

I became a certified Hula instructor (I have my graduation certificate to prove it!) and performed in a Hula show in The Stardust Theatre along with fellow passengers.

The activities onboard were endless and catered
to a wide variety of interests.

The shore excursions offered were outstanding. I strongly recommend The Maui Downhill Bicycling adventure from The Haleakala Volcano (eruption not included!) You will experience some of the most breathtaking views of the week during this downhill extravaganza. It's a 20-mile ride and minimal peddling is required.

Another worthwhile but not as active excursion is The Wailua River & Fern Grotto. This was a very entertaining sail with a stop at the world-renowned cave where many couples choose to be married. Calling all golfers, The Kauai Lagoons Kiele Golf Course is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Hawaii golf at it's best.

The evening shows on Norwegian are some of the best at sea thanks to The Jean Ann Ryan Company. My favorites were a tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber ~ Music Of The Night and It's Fame. The most popular show of the week was Cirque Asia.

At the end of the week we all agreed The Norwegian Star was the best choice for a Hawaii cruise. I personally recommend a custom designed itinerary with a pre-cruise hotel stay in Waikiki. The Hyatt Regency Waikiki would be my pick for the most outstanding staff, service and location. Our full ocean/Diamond Head View from the 34th floor was pure heaven.
